Types of Sunscreens and Choosing the Best One for You

by Linda Varga on July 10, 2012

We’ve been discussing a lot about sunscreens on the blog lately. From choosing the best sunscreens this summer, to facts about the various sunscreens. Yes, sunscreens are an important part of our sun safety kit and the more we know about them, the better informed you will be as a consumer.

Today, let’s take a look at the types of sunscreens and choose which one is the best for your lifestyle and needs:

Chemical Blocking Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens absorb either UVA or UVB rays and usually, contain UVB-absorbing chemicals such as avobenzone and benzophenone. Chemical based sunscreens need to be reapplied more frequently.

Physical Blocking Sunscreens

Physical sunscreens act as a shield and contain ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sunscreens reflect both UVA and UVB radiation and are longer-lasting than chemical sunscreens.

Broad Spectrum Sunscreens

These sunscreens combine both physical and chemical ingredients in order to provide both UVA and UVB protection. The broad spectrum sunscreens are ideally, the type of sunscreen that you should be using to stay really safe in the sun.

Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin type and Lifestyle

Sunscreens for Sensitive Skin

Look for a sunscreen that has mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium oxide which are less likely than chemicals to irritate your sensitive skin.

Sunscreens for Active Lifestyles

Are you a runner? Or a sports enthusiast? Choose a sunscreen that is sweat-and water-resistant so that they won’t run and sting your eyes or come off with a bit of sweat.

Sunscreens for Acne-Prone Skin

Oily and acne-prone skin will benefit from using an oil-free sunscreen lotion that would dry quickly, won’t clog pores or not add more grease to your skin.

The BEST Sunscreens

The EWG has updated its list of safe sunscreens for the beach and sports  as well as its list of lip balms with SPF, moisturizers with SPF and makeup with SPF.
