Summer is right around the corner and chances are your kids are already gearing up for some serious fun in the sun. Are you worried about keeping them safe without cutting down on their fun?
Here are some great sun safety tips for kids to help “block the sun, not the fun!”
1. Encourage Kids to Dress Appropriately
First and foremost, explain the importance of dressing appropriately when playing outdoors. Dressing up kids in sun-protective clothes or light, long-sleeved tees and slacks will help protect the skin from UV rays. Also, ensure that the li’l ones wear hats that shade their face to keep them sun safe. To motivate them further, take the kids clothes shopping and wisely guide their choices.
Babies, however, should be kept out of the sun whenever possible and if they have to be out, dress them up in clothes that cover them fully.
2. Shop for Some Fun Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a great way to protect the eyes. Do adequate research on how to buy sunglasses that actually protect a child’s eyes before heading to the store to pick them.
3. Slather on Sunscreen
Yes, sunscreen is important. Luckily for you, you can get plenty of kid-friendly sunscreens that come with cute names and lovely fragrances. Choose a waterproof, sweat-proof version that can be easily and quickly applied.
When choosing a sunscreen for sun safety, check the degree of protection it offers. An SPF of 30 or higher is what KidsHealth recommends for children 6 months or older. Also, apply a sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before your kids head out into the sun.
4. Show’ Em the Shade
Yes, fun in the sun is nice but give children plenty of ‘shady’ options to choose from as well to increase sun protection. Schedule indoor games, puzzle play, craft activities and reading hour to the time when the Sun’s rays are the strongest. Even when outdoors, encourage children to use a large umbrella or canopy complete with the ezShade sun shield or a play tent.
5. More Resources for Sun Safety for Kids
