Sun Safety and Shade: Resources to Keep You Sun Safe

by Linda Varga on May 22, 2012

We’ve been talking about beach umbrella safety and how to buy the best portable shade to keep you sun safe all this month. Naturally, we want to ensure that when you head to the beach or the park the next time, you know enough about shade options to keep you sun safe.

Research has shown that up to 84% of UV rays found in direct sunlight can be found in the shade. That means that some shade only provides a 16% protection from UV rays. How is this possible? When UV rays enter the atmosphere they bounce off of things around you like water, sand and concrete. Since UV rays bounce, they can and do bounce under shade structures.

While shade is a vital part of staying safe in the sun, it should always be used in conjunction with other sun safety products, such as sunscreen and clothing.

Whether you use an umbrella, canopy or sit under a tree, making sure that exposure to the sky and the sun is limited is what will keep you sun safe. How to gauge your shade? It’s an easy test – If you can see the sky under your shade then you are less than fully protected.

SunSmart website recommends, “For the most effective UV protection, combine shade with protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen.”
